Daily Focus: Eric Carle, Author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Goals:
To learn about the life of the author/ illustrator Eric Carle
To understand gain knowledge about the process Carle uses to create
his artwork.
To gain skills in using the internet.
To create paper similar to that used by Eric Carle.
Concepts:
Eric Carle is the Author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Eric Carle has been drawing since he was young.
Collage is the media used in Eric Carle’s artwork.
Eric Carle paints with acrylics on tissue paper to make his rich colors.
He uses several colors and designs on each page of tissue paper.
Materials:
Art smocks
Acrylic paint in many different colors
Paint brushes
Paint pallets
Tissue paper

Computer with internet connection
The Lesson:
1. Show children The Very Hungry Caterpillar. (Was read to class
on previous day)
2. Ask them how they think Eric Carl made the illustrations.
Did he use pencil, paint, markers, paper?
3. Visit the site, http://www.eric-carle.com/makepic.html
to see how Eric Carle makes his artwork.
4. Show children the book, The Art of Eric Carle.
5. Have children paint colors and designs on tissue paper just like
Eric Carle.
6. Let paper dry until afternoon when we will make our collages.
